In a major regulatory enforcement action signaling tightened oversight over Ethiopia’s commercial broadcasting landscape, the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) announced the temporary six-month suspension of JFM 106.7’s radio transmission license, effective July 8, 2026 (Hamle 01, 2018 E.C.).

The decision—formally finalized in a statement on July 22, 2026—highlights ongoing tensions between regulatory mandates and private broadcasters navigating compliance in Ethiopia's evolving media environment.

According to the EMA press statement, the suspension stems from systematic failures by JFM 106.7 to meet baseline statutory requirements under Proclamation No. 1238/2021. Following a series of content monitoring reviews and physical on-site inspections, the regulatory body detailed several critical non-compliance issues:

Commercial broadcasters are legally required to allocate at least 60% of weekly broadcast time to local coverage specific to their licensed broadcast area, reserving the remainder for broader regional and national programming. JFM failed to meet these local content thresholds.

The station fell short of statutory benchmarks obligating broadcasters to deliver programming that informs, educates, and entertains the public.

The regulator asserted that JFM 106.7 failed to promote broadcasting services that contribute constructively to political, social, and economic development, as well as constitutional principles and shared national values.

Despite repeated formal feedback, written warnings, and verbal notifications, the EMA noted a complete absence of corrective measures from the station's management.

As a consequence of the EMA’s directive, the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) has frozen JFM’s designated 106.7 MHz frequency. The station has been ordered to immediately cease all transmissions on the airwaves until all contractual and legal obligations are fully satisfied.

"The station must respect this decision, remain compliant with the law, and immediately halt broadcasting," the EMA stated, calling upon relevant state stakeholders to ensure strict enforcement of the six-month blackout.

The temporary shutdown of JFM 106.7 underscores the balancing act facing independent broadcasters in Ethiopia. Commercial FM stations frequently struggle to generate sufficient local content while balancing tight advertising revenue models, leading many to default to music-heavy or syndicated formats that run afoul of local quota mandates.

However, the EMA’s firm stance reinforces a clear message to the broader media sector: regulatory compliance regarding local content, public service obligations, and constitutional alignment will be strictly enforced as Ethiopia continues to overhaul its public and private communication channels.
