The African Union (AU) Commission has issued a formal declaration of sorrow and solidarity in response to the raging wildfires across parts of Spain and France, offering condolences to the victims and calling for immediate global action on climate resilience.

In an official press statement released on July 28, 2026, from the headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed "profound sorrow" over the disaster. The fires have claimed lives, forced thousands of residents from their homes, caused extensive property damage, and wrought severe environmental destruction across affected European communities.

Beyond expressing sympathies, Chairperson Youssouf framed the disaster as a clear symptom of a broader, systemic threat: the escalating global climate emergency.

He noted with deep concern that the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced global cooperation. He emphasized that catastrophic wildfires, droughts, and severe weather patterns can no longer be viewed as isolated regional events, but as a shared planetary crisis requiring collective responsibility.

"The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and climate-related disasters reinforce the urgent need for enhanced global cooperation to address the climate crisis."

Aligning his remarks with the AU’s established common position on climate change, the Chairperson highlighted several crucial steps necessary to mitigate future climate-driven disasters, including:

Moving beyond national boundaries to build shared disaster response strategies. Scaling up measures that prepare infrastructure and communities for extreme weather events. Ensuring developed nations honor promises regarding climate finance, technological transfer, and capacity-building.

Youssouf specifically underscored the vulnerability of developing nations, noting that international support and resource-sharing remain essential for countries least equipped to handle severe environmental disruption.

Concluding the statement, the AU Commission reaffirmed its unwavering support for the governments and citizens of Spain and France during this challenging recovery period. The Chairperson expressed full confidence in the resilience of both nations as emergency responders, communities, and authorities work tirelessly to contain the flames and begin rebuilding.

The African Union’s message highlights a growing recognition in international diplomacy: climate disasters transcend borders, making global solidarity and shared commitment vital to protecting communities worldwide.
