Ethiopia will officially establish its new executive government and hold the joint opening session of parliament on October 5, 2026 (Meskerem 25, 2019 E.C.), following the completion of the country's 7th National General Election.
In an official statement issued on September 23, 2026 Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives, confirmed that all necessary logistical and constitutional preparations for the government formation ceremony are complete. Over 54 million registered voters and 10,438 candidates across 42 political parties participated in the general election, which parliamentary leadership declared peaceful, democratic, and credible.
Under Article 50(3) of the FDRE Constitution, the House of Peoples' Representatives stands as the highest authority of the federal government, directly accountable to the public. Pursuant to Article 58(2), the third legislative term of the House officially begins on the final Monday of the month of Meskerem.
Citing Article 56, the political party or coalition securing a parliamentary majority will form and lead the new federal executive branch. The incoming administration will assume full executive responsibility to govern the nation for the 2026–2031 tenure on October 5.
