National digital ID initiative, Fayda, is rapidly reshaping the country’s economic landscape. Launched in 2023, the system has achieved significant momentum, hitting 49.1 million enrollments as of August 24.
Backed by 12,000 biometric registration kits deployed nationwide, 150 institutions have already integrated the platform, completing over 194 million electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verifications.
According to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), Fayda is a cornerstone of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized that the system is projected to contribute up to seven percent to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, while safeguarding data privacy and economic sovereignty.
The initiative is actively onboarding millions of previously unbanked and marginalized citizens into the formal economy. By expediting banking, mobile money transfers, and routine business transactions, Fayda is streamlining daily commerce. Special enrollment priorities targeting women, refugees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) allow vulnerable populations to open bank accounts, access credit, and engage in economic activities, fulfilling key World Bank financial inclusion goals.
Ethiopia aims to reach 90 million enrollments by 2027, positioning Fayda as essential digital public infrastructure rather than a simple administrative database.
To scale operations, Ethiopia recently transformed the national ID authority into a state-owned commercial enterprise named Faydaverse. Inaugurated earlier this month, Faydaverse is tasked with developing, managing, and expanding trusted digital public infrastructure to modernize the nation's identity ecosystem.
